Does anyone else hate the kind of guys that go on internet dating sites?

Most of them are total horny freaks that are just looking for sex. They make me sick.

They try to hook up with as many girls as possible – even the ones that say they want a relationship.

Guys on internet dating sites are dogs. Do you agree?

I kinda agree.

Absolute and Relative Dating Methods in Prehistory

Absolute and Relative Dating Methods in Prehistory

$103.56

This work challenges the claim that Hallan Cemi (near Batman in Southeastern Turkey) was occupied during the Epipaleolithic (11th millennium BP). While technotypological analyses of some objects, chipped stone in particular, appear to place the sites occupation within the 11th millennium, the iconography etched into ground stone and worked bone is too similar to much later sites nearby and in the Urfa Plain to ignore. Various descriptions of the site have been given, from Epipaleolithic to Aceramic Neolithic. This terminological discrepancy reflects not only on the problem of dating Hallan Cemi, but also on the larger issue of how one should describe the prehistory of Southeastern Anatolia. The latter problems are claimed to be the combined product of a) the relatively few sites within the region with which to contextualize Hallan Cemi and construct a local chronocultural scheme, and b) the related issue of imposing terminologies from other regions which may not be appropriate for Southeastern Anatolia. ”Everybody’s so different and yet everybody has this common bond”: Identity construction, exploration, and negotiation among adolescents in two youth development programs.

$49.99

In this study, I explore how processes of identity construction, exploration, and negotiation occurred among adolescents in two theatrical youth development programs. Drawing on data collected from 40 semi-structured interviews and 175 hours of participant observation with young people and facilitators involved in two theatre-based after-school dating violence prevention programs, I investigate how adolescents understood their own and others’ multiple identity dimensions, and how these understandings informed group identity. I use frameworks of social construction and symbolic interaction to examine how interpersonal interaction simultaneously challenged and (re)produced norms regarding race, class, gender, sexuality, and religion. I also examine the unique role of theatrical practice in these processes of identity construction and communication with others.;The youth constructed their identities (and the identities of others) using several linguistic and embodied processes. The linguistic processes included (1) labeling themselves as members of particular identities, (2) using common language to construct (sub)groups of identity, (3) ‘puzzling through’ the meanings of particular identities, and (4) othering—using moral justifications to construct themselves as different from and better than people of different identities. The embodied processes included (1) externally marking their appearances (with clothes, jewelry, etc.) to signify certain identities, (2) moving their bodies and touching (or not touching) other people in particular ways as part of inhabiting their identities, and (3) expressing (and suppressing) particular emotions in order to feel authentically part of their identities.;In addition to being locations in which certain identities were (re)produced, the youth development programs were sites of construction of new identities, such as “theatre person” and “someone who has experienced abuse.” The programs were also places where the youth met and

'Where Sky and Yorkshire and Water Meet': The Story of the Melton Landscape from Prehistory to the Present

‘Where Sky and Yorkshire and Water Meet’: The Story of the Melton Landscape from Prehistory to the Present

$50

An account of the multi-period, 13-hectare, excavations associated with a road scheme on the A63 at Melton, East Yorkshire, and funded by the Highways Agency. They revealed buildings, boundaries, burials and tracks associated with a late Iron Age and early Roman ladder settlement and showed that its origins lay in the early centuries of the first millennium BC. Many occupation sites of this period, in East Yorkshire, show little apparent change at the time of the Roman conquest but here there were clear transformations. Buildings were abandoned just before the conquest and new boundaries were laid out soon after. The burial sequence ran from the early Bronze Age to the late Iron Age and included a rare, early Iron Age inhumation cemetery, pre-dating the region’s famous square barrow burials by a couple of centuries. There was also a small group of Anglo-Saxon burials with contemporary 7th century occupation, and medieval remains on the edge of the modern village of Melton.

Excerpt: Querétaro (Spanish pronunciation: ; former formal name: Querétaro Arteaga) is a state in central México. Its capital is the city of Santiago de Querétaro, although in general parlance the name “Querétaro” is used for both the city and the state. The name is thought to come from a phrase in the Otomi language meaning “place of the ball game”, or from a phrase in the P’urhépecha language translated as “place of the great city”. Querétaro is bordered to the north by the state of San Luis Potosí, to the west by Guanajuato, to the east by Hidalgo, to the southeast by Mexico State, and to the southwest by Michoacán. The capital city of Santiago de Querétaro is located some 257 kilometres (160 miles) to the northwest of Mexico City. Other important cities include San Juan del Rio and El Pueblito. Querétaro was inhabited by the Otomí and P’urhépecha (Tarascos), the latter being the ruling people. There was also a small presence of nomadic tribes, called Chichimecas. There are some archeological sites dating from this era, such as the pyramid

Excerpt: The following events occurred in architecture in the 4th millennium BC : See also (online edition) A hyperlinked version of this chapter is at Stonehenge, Avebury and Associated Sites • “Bluestonehenge” or “Bluehenge” is a prehistoric henge and stone circle monument that was discovered by the Stonehenge Riverside Project about 1 mile (1.6 km) south-east of Stonehenge in Wiltshire , England . All that presently remains of the site is the ditch of the henge and a series of stone settings, none of which is visible above ground. The site was excavated in August 2008 and again in August 2009 and is considered to be an important find by archaeologists . Full details of the discovery are expected to be published in February 2010. Initial findings The monument has been tentatively dated to between about 3000 and 2400 BC, although radiocarbon dating of antler tools found at the site has not yet been completed. Excavation revealed several stone settings that are thought to have been erected around 3000 BC. It is estimated that there may have been as many as 27 stones in a circle 33 feet (10 m) wide. Charcoal was found in some holes, suggesting that burning may have taken place there. One suggestion is that the henge was a site for cremations . The name “Bluestonehenge” is derived from the discovery of small stone chips in some of the stone settings. These bluestones are also found in Stonehenge and consist of a wide range of rock types

A carbon and nitrogen isotopic analysis of Pleistocene food webs in North America: Implications for paleoecology and extinction.

A carbon and nitrogen isotopic analysis of Pleistocene food webs in North America: Implications for paleoecology and extinction.

$69

Carbon and nitrogen isotopic reconstructions of North American Pleistocene trophic relationships were used to examine the extinction within terrestrial mammals ∼10,000 years ago and distinguish between two potential causal mechanisms – human over-hunting and climate change. Additionally, individual animals were examined for unique isotopic signatures associated with feeding specializations, digestive strategies, and juveniles. Bones representing a comprehensive set of Pleistocene mammalian genera were obtained from three fossil localities: McKittrick Brea, California; Saltville, Virginia; and several sites in Florida. Collagen, a durable bone protein whose carbon and nitrogen isotopic composition reflects dietary input, was extracted from specimens and analyzed for delta-13C, delta- 15N, % collagen, %C, %N, and C:N. Radiocarbon dating and amino acid analyses were performed on select sample sets. Results indicated that several specimens contained well preserved collagen, the isotopic values of which indicated both trophic position and vegetation preference. Those samples that contained residual diagenetic proteinaceous material exhibited increased hydrolysis of collagen with time and leaching of disassociated amino acids. Trophic relationships were reconstructed from well preserved specimens for Aucilla River, Florida and the herbivores of Saltville, Virginia, with a less complete reconstruction established for McKittrick Brea, California. The following notable trends emerged: (1) absence of nitrogen isotopic distinction between ruminants and non-ruminants, (2) enriched juvenile nitrogen isotopic signature, (3) distinction of giant ground sloths as omnivores, (4) C4 grass grazers and open C4 grasslands restricted to southern North American latitudes, (5) generalized and opportunistic feeding habits of herbivores, (6) potential prey specializations of carnivores. A noticeable lack of competition and feeding specialists among herbivores suggested a

 Ancestral Hopi Migrations

Ancestral Hopi Migrations

$49.11

Southwestern archaeologists have long speculated about the scale and impact of ancient population movements. In Ancestral Hopi Migrations, Patrick Lyons infers the movement of large numbers of people from the Kayenta and Tusayan regions of northern Arizona to every major river valley in Arizona, parts of New Mexico, and northern Mexico. Building upon earlier studies, Lyons uses chemical sourcing of ceramics and analyses of painted pottery designs to distinguish among traces of exchange, emulation, and migration. He demonstrates strong similarities among the pottery traditions of the Kayenta region, the Hopi Mesas, and the Homol’ovi villages, near Winslow, Arizona. Architectural evidence marshaled by Lyons corroborates his conclusion that the inhabitants of Homol’ovi were immigrants from the north.Placing the Homol’ovi case study in a larger context, Lyons synthesizes evidence of northern immigrants recovered from sites dating between A.D. 1250 and 1450. His data support Patricia Crown’s contention that the movement of these groups is linked to the origin of the Salado polychromes and further indicate that these immigrants and their descendants were responsible for the production of Roosevelt Red Ware throughout much of the Greater Southwest. Offering an innovative juxtaposition of anthropological data bearing on Hopi migrations and oral accounts of the tribe’s origin and history, Lyons highlights the many points of agreement between these two bodies of knowledge. Lyons argues that appreciating the scale of population movement that characterized the late prehistoric period is prerequisite to understanding regional phenomena such as Salado and to illuminating the connections betweentribal peoples of the Southwest and their ancestors.

It is in Ni that the trunk road running from the north down the Morava River valley forks into two major lines: – the south one, leading to Thessalonica and Athens, – and the east one, leading towards Sofia and Istanbul, and further on, towards the Near East. The central city area is at 194m altitude above sea level (the Main City Square). The highest point in the city area is Sokolov kamen (Falcon’s rock) on Suva Planina Mountain (1523m) while the lowest spot is at Trupale, near the mouth of the Niava (173m). The city area covers 596.71 km². The climate of the Ni area is moderate and continental, with an average temperature of 11.2°C. July is the warmest month of the year, with the average of 21.2°C. The coldest month is January, averaging at 0.2°C. The average of the annual rainfall is 567.25 mm/m². The average barometer value is 992.74 mb. There are 123 days with rain and 43 days with snow. On the average, the wind force is just below 3 Beaufort. Stone mallet found in Niava River Archaeological evidence shows a neolithic settlement in the city dating from 5,000 to 2,000 BCE. The city’s early name under the Roman Empire remained Naissus, which is the Latin name derived from its original name Naissos. The etymology of the original name Naissos (“city of the nymphs”) was derived from a mythical creature of Greek mythology – Naiad (from the Greek , “to flow,” and , “running water”) which was the nymph of freshwater streams rivers and lakes. Ni is a possible location of Nysa, a mythical place in Greek mythology where the young god Dionysus was raised. Navissos, was

Excerpt: The 10th-century city wall is an ancient fortification re-excavated in 2010 in the City of David by archaeologist Eilat Mazar who believes that it dates to the late 10th-century BCE.Although consensus on the dating of the wall has not been reached by the archaeological community, Mazar maintains that, “It’s the most significant construction we have from First Temple days in Israel,” and “It means that at that time, the 10th century, in Jerusalem there was a regime capable of carrying out such construction.” The 10th century is the period the Bible describes as the reign of King Solomon. A section of wall 79 metres (259 ft) long and 6 metres (20 ft) high has been uncovered. The discoveries include an inner gatehouse, a “royal structure” and a corner tower with a base measuring 23 metres (75 ft) by 18 metres (59 ft) from which watchmen could keep watch on the Kidron Valley . According to Mazar, the built structures are similar to the First Temple era fortifications of Megiddo , Beersheba and Ashdod . Mazar told reporters that “A comparison of this latest finding with city walls and gates from the period of the First Temple, as well as pottery found at the site,” enable her to “postulate, with a great degree of assurance” that the wall dates form the late 10th-century BCE. Mazar told reporters that “A comparison of this latest finding with city walls and gates from the period of

Excerpt: Sutton Hoo near Woodbridge, Suffolk, England, is the site of two Anglo-Saxon cemeteries of the 6th century and early 7th century, one of which contained an undisturbed ship burial including a wealth of artifacts of outstanding art-historical and archaeological significance. Sutton Hoo is of a primary importance to early medieval historians because it sheds light on a period of English history which is on the margin between myth, legend and historical documentation. Use of the site culminated at a time when the ruler (Rædwald) of East Anglia held senior power among the English people, and played a dynamic (if ambiguous) part in the establishment of Christian rulership in England. It is central to understanding of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of East Anglia and of the period in a wider perspective. The ship-burial, probably dating from the early 7th to 9th century and excavated in 1939, is one of the most magnificent archaeological finds in England for its size and completeness, far-reaching connections, quality and beauty of its contents, and for the profound interest of the burial ritual itself. Although it is the ship-burial which commands the widest attention from tourists, there is also rich historical meaning in the two separate cemeteries, their position in relation to the Deben estuary and the North Sea, and their relation to other sites in the immediate neighbourhood. Excerpt: Xochipala is a minor archaeological site in the Mexican state of Guerrero, whose name has become attached, somewhat erroneously, to a style of Formative Period figurines and pottery. The Organera Xochipala archaeological zone takes its name from the nearby village of Xoxhipala and the local organ pipe cactus. Unlike the better-known Xochipala-style figurines and stone bowls, which have been dated to the Formative (or Preclassic) Period 1500 to 200 BCE, the archaeological site belongs to the Classic and, most importantly, the Postclassic eras, from 200 to 1400 CE. In the mid-20th century this site, representative of the Mezcala culture, was extensively looted of an estimated 20,000 pieces. The site is particularly notable for the discovery of a corbelled arch, an innovation generally attributed the Maya. Whether the corbelled arch was independently developed in Guerrero or was imported from the Maya regions is still unsettled. Two Formative Period Xochipala figurines, 13th – 10th century BCE (?)The Xochipala style is represented by some of the earliest and most naturalistic Mesoamerican figurines, as well as a number of bowls intricately carved from very hard stone. The first rediscovered Xochipala-style figurine was purchased in Guerrero in 1897 by William Niven and sold to the Peabody Museum in 1903. Unfortunately, no Xochipala figurine has yet been found in archaeological context, but only through collectors and art dealers. The earliest date assigned to any figurine is 1500 BCE. but without provenance, so dating is based on stylistic and compositional characteristics. To achieve a more realistic look, many of the figurines were first modeled without clothing, which was then draped applique-like about the body. It has bee… More:

It is noted for three large carved Pictish stones (and one fragment) dating from the 7th and 8th centuries AD (Historic Scotland); the stones can be viewed at any time in spring-autumn, but are covered by wooden boxes in the winter to prevent frost damage. Two stones (and the fragment) stand by the B9134 Forfar-Brechin road, the Kirkyard Stone stands in the nearby graveyard of the parish church. Aberlemno I: Serpent Stone, Class I Pictish StoneThe central roadside stone is a Class I (unshaped, incised) standing stone with three deeply incised Pictish symbols on one face: the serpent, the double disc and Z-rod and the mirror and comb. The meaning of these symbols is unknown. The other face of the stone exhibits prehistoric cup marks, showing that it has been re-used. This stone is known as Aberlemno I or the Serpent Stone. Aberlemno II: Kirkyard Stone, Class II Pictish StoneThe Kirkyard Stone, also known as Aberlemno II, is a Class II Pictish stone. Excerpt: Chalcatzingo is a Mesoamerican archaeological site in the Valley of Morelos dating from the Formative Period of Mesoamerican chronology. The site is well-known for its extensive array of Olmec-style monumental art and iconography. Located in the southern portion of the Central Highlands of Mexico, Chalcatzingo is estimated to have been settled as early as 1500 BCE. The inhabitants began to produce and display Olmec-style art and architecture around 900 BCE. At its height between 700 BCE and 500 BCE, Chalcatzingo’s population is estimated at between five hundred and a thousand individuals. By 500 BCE it had gone into decline. The Chalcatzingo center covers roughly 100 acres. It was well-situated in a fertile plain, at the basse of two tall hills, Cerro Chalcatzingo and Cerro Delgado. Cerro Chalcatzingo has evidence of long regard and use as a site of ritual significance. The climate in Morelos is generally warmer and more humid than the rest of the Highlands. A spring rising at the base of the hills provided a source of drinking water for the population. Chalcatzingo connected trade routes between Guerrero, the Valley of Mexico, Oaxaca, and the Gulf Lowlands. Chalcatzingo provides unique and interesting examples of Olmec-style art and architecture. The village contained a central plaza area, designated Terrace 1, downhill from elite residences. Terrace 25 is composed of a sunken patio of a style seen at Teopantecuanitlan. In the center of this sunken patio is a tabletop altar reminiscent of those at La Venta and San Lorenzo Tenochtitlán, both lowland Olmec centers. Structure 4 is Chalcatzingos largest structure, an almost-square platform measuring approximately 70 m (230ft) on each side. Burials of high-status individuals have been excavated … More:

It lies near the southern tip of the Shetland Mainland and has been described as “one of the most remarkable archaeological sites ever excavated in the British Isles”. It contains remains dating from 2500 BC up to the 17th century. The Bronze Age settlers left evidence of several small oval houses with thick stone walls and various artefacts including a decorated bone object. The Iron Age ruins include several different types of structure including a broch and a defensive wall around the site. The Pictish period provides various works of art including a painted pebble and a symbol stone. The Viking-age ruins make up the largest such site visible anywhere in Britain and include a longhouse; excavations provided numerous tools and a detailed insight into life in Shetland at this time. The most visible structures on the site are the walls of the Scottish period fortified manor house, which inspired the name “Jarlshof” that first appears in an 1821 novel by Walter Scott. The site is in the care of Historic Scotland, and is open from April to September. Jarlshof lies near the southern tip of the Shetland Mainland, close to the settlements of Sumburgh and Grutness and to the south end of Sumburgh Airport. The site overlooks an arm of the sea called the West Voe of Sumburgh and the nearby freshwater springs and building materials available on the beach will have added to the location’s attraction as a settlement. The area of the municipality is 833 km (322 sq mi). The town is situated at 44°58′39″ N and 16°42′29″ E, at an altitude of 133 m (436 feet). The terrain ascends to the north-east of Prijedor in waves and gradually becomes the mountain range of the Kozara mountain, which is famous from the peoples’ uprisings in the previous centuries and battles against fascism during the Second World War. The very town lies on the alluvial terrain created by the Sana river and its tributaries on the south-western hillsides of the Kozara mountain. One new building in Prijedor As a fortified and populated place it is of relatively earlier date and we can trace its history back to the end of the 17th century, according to known sources. However, the very region, belonging to the administrative center of Prijedor, is much older concerning the colonization and cultural happenings, and it has continuity until the emergence of the town. Numerous prehistoric, ancient and mediaeval sites speak in their archeological language about specific cultural expressions of humans in different periods of time. During the prehistoric period, dating from 2100 B.C., the traces of life are evident in numerous settlements in the region of the present-day town, with necropolises subjacent to the settlements, as a rule. In the pre-Roman and Roman period this area was settled by a large Illyrian tribe Maezaei, a sub-tribe of Pannonians, with a talent for the mining. In essence, Pearl places cultural change alongside environmental change and addresses four main questions: whether the landscape affected the distribtion of archaeological sites in the study area; the nature of land-use patterns in the Middle to Late Stone Age; the impact of the arrival of pastoralism on the environment; whether changing economic patterns could be attributed to environmental change.

Chapters: Linear Pottery Culture, Rössen Culture, Michelsberg Culture, Hamburg Culture, Federmesser Culture. Excerpt: The Federmesser culture is a toolmaking tradition of the late Upper Palaeolithic era, of the Northern European Plain dating to between c. 9800 and 8800 BC (uncalibrated ). It is closely related to the Tjongerian culture , as both have been suggested as being derived from the more generalized Azilian culture. It used small backed flint blades and shares characteristics with the Creswellian culture in Britain.References (URLs online) A hyperlinked version of this chapter is at The Hamburg culture (13,500-11,100 BC) was a Late Upper Paleolithic culture of reindeer hunters in northwestern Europe during the last part of the Weichsel Glaciation and beginning of the Meiendorf Interstadial. Sites are found close to the ice caps of the time. The Hamburg Culture has been identified at many places, for example, the settlement at Meiendorf and Ahrensburg north of Hamburg , Germany . It is characterized by shouldered points and zinken tools, which were used as chisels when working with horns . In later periods tanged Havelte-type points appear, sometimes described as most of all a northwestern phenomenon. Notwithstanding the spread over a large geographical area in which a homogeneous development is not to be expected, the definition of the Hamburgian as a technological complex of its own has not recently been questioned. A Hamburg culture arrow headThe culture spread from northern France to southern Scandinavia in the north and to Poland in the east.In the early 1980s, the first find from the culture in Scandinavia was excavated at Jels in Sønderjylland . Recently, new finds have been discovered at, for example, Finja in northern Skåne . The latest findings

Excerpt: Ban Chiang (Thai: ) is an archeological site located in Nong Han district, Udon Thani Province, Thailand. It has been on the UNESCO world heritage list since 1992. Ban Chiang pottery in the Museum für Indische Kunst, Berlin-DahlemDiscovered in 1966, the site attracted enormous publicity due to its attractive red painted pottery. Villagers had uncovered some of the pottery in prior years without insight into its age or historical importance. In August 1966 Steve Young, an anthropology and government student at Harvard College, was living in the village conducting interviews for his senior honors thesis. Young, a speaker of Thai, was familiar with the work of William Solheim and his theory of possible ancient origins of civilization in Southeast Asia. One day while walking down a path in Ban Chiang with his assistant, an art teacher in the village school, Young tripped over a root of a tree Kapok and fell on his face in the dirt path. Under him were the exposed tops of pottery jars of small and medium sizes. Young recognized that the firing techniques used to make the pots were very rudimentary but that the designs applied to the surface of the vessels were unique and wonderful. He took samples of pots to Princess Phanthip Chumbote who had the private museum of Suan Pakkad in Bangkok and to Chin Yu Di of the Thai Government’s Fine Arts Department Later, Elisabeth Lyons, an art historian on the staff of the Ford Foundation, sent sherds from Ban Chiang to the University of Pennsylvania for dating. Archaeology: An Introduction looks behind the popular aspects of archaeology such as the discovery and excavation of sites, the study of human remains and animal bones, radiocarbon dating, museums and ‘heritage’ displays, and reveals the methods used by archaeologists. It also explains how the subject emerged from an amateur pursuit in the eighteenth century into a serious discipline, and explores changing fashions in interpretation in recent decades. This fifth edition has been updated by a new co-author, Tom Moore, and continues to include key references and guidance to help new readers find their way through the ever expanding range of archaeological publications. It conveys the excitement of new archaeological discoveries that appear on television or in newspapers while helping readers to evaluate them by explaining the methods and theories that lie behind them. Above all, while serving as a lucid textbook, it remains a very accessible account that will interest a wide readership. In addition to drawing upon examples and case studies from many regions of the world and periods of the past, it incorporates the authors’ own fieldwork, research and teaching and features a new four-colour text design and colour illustrations plus an additional 50 topic boxes. Atlantis Blueprint: Unlocking the Ancient Mysteries of a Long-Lost Civilization

$13.99

CAN ARCHAEOLOGY’S GREATEST MYSTERIES BE TRACED BACK TO THE LOST CIVILIZATION OF ATLANTIS?The Great Pyramid. Stonehenge. Machu Picchu. For centuries, these and other sacred sites have attracted pilgrims, scholars, and adventurers drawn by the possibility that their true spiritual and technological secrets remain hidden. Who could have built these elaborate monuments? How did they do it? And what were their incomprehensible efforts and sacrifices designed to accomplish? Now comes a revolutionary theory that connects these mysteries to reveal a hidden global pattern–the ancient work of an advanced civilization whose warnings of planetary cataclysm now reverberate across one hundred millennia. Here is startling evidence of an intelligent society dating back as much as 100,000 years–one that sailed the oceans of the world, building monuments to preserve and communicate its remarkable wisdom. The Atlantis Blueprint is the authors’ term for a complex network of connections between these sacred sites that trace back to Atlantis: a sophisticated maritime society that charted the globe from its home base in Antarctica…until it was obliterated by devastating global changes it anticipated but could not escape. Opening up a Pandora’s box of ancient mysteries, lost worlds, and millennial riddles, The Atlantis Blueprint is a story as controversial, fascinating, dangerous–and inspiring–as any ever told.

Excerpt: The Cro-Magnon (pronounced , French ) were the first early modern humans (early Homo sapiens sapiens) of the European Upper Paleolithic in Europe. The earliest known remains of Cro-Magnon-like humans are radiometrically dated to 35,000 before present. Abri de Crô-Magnon, site of the first discovery in 1868The name derives from the Abri de Crô-Magnon (French: rock shelter of Crô-Magnon) near the commune of Les Eyzies-de-Tayac-Sireuil in southwest France, where the first specimen was found. Being the oldest known modern humans (Homo sapiens) in Europe, the Cro-Magnon were from the outset linked to the well-known Lascaux cave paintings and the Aurignacian culture that flourished in southern France and Germany. As additional remains of early modern humans were discovered in archaeological sites from Western Europe and elsewhere, and dating techniques improved in the early 20th century, new finds were added to the taxonomic classification. The term “Cro-Magnon” soon came to be used in a general sense to describe the oldest modern people in Europe. By the 1970s the term was used for any early modern human the World over, as was the case with the far-flung Jebel Qafzeh remains in Israel and various Paleo-Indians in the Americas. However, analyses based on more current data concerning the migrations of early humans have contributed to a refined definition of this expression. Today, the term “Cro-Magnon” falls outside the usual naming conventions for early humans, though it remains an important term within the archaeological community as an identifier for the commensurate fossil remains in Europe and adjacent areas. An example of this is how current scientific literature prefers the term “European Early Modern Humans” (or EEMH), instead of “Cro-Magnon…

For instance, there’s wanting to kill Charlotte for the mess she’s made of her life. Between struggling to pay the bills and halfheartedly filling out questionnaires on Internet dating sites, Karen uncovers a scandalous family secret involving her own birth, and then falls back into bed with her sexy ex-husband. So much for perfect timing. In the meantime, Karen’s mother, Nan, is having a wee bit of trouble with names (sometimes her own). But that doesn’t keep her from retaining a few things she’d rather forget. Of course, Nan knows that everything will work out fine for Charlotte and the baby–these things usually do. Now, if only she could put the pieces of her own fragmented memory together, she might have an interesting tale or two to share. In this wickedly funny, disarmingly moving novel, three generations of mothers learn that it’s the simplest mistakes that can change your life forever. Preceded by Viking sites such as Timerevo from the 8th or 9th centuries, the city is said to have been founded in 1010 as an outpost of the Principality of Rostov Veliky, and was first mentioned in 1071. Capital of an independent Principality of Yaroslavl from 1218, it was incorporated into Muscovy in 1463. In the 17th century it was Russia's second largest city, and for a time (during the Polish occupation of Moscow in 1612), the country's de facto capital. Today, Yaroslavl is an important industrial center (petrochemical plant, tire manufacturing plant, diesel engines plant and many others). LocationYaroslavl is located 155 miles (249 km) from Moscow. Many of the roads connecting these cities are two-lane highways. Many Orthodox shrines and monasteries lie along the banks of the Volga. The most ancient building in the city is the Spaso-Preobrazhensky ("Transfiguration of the Saviour") Cathedral of the Spassky (St Saviour) Monastery constructed in 15061516 on the foundations of the original edifice dating back to 12161224. In the 16th century, the first stone wall is built around the monastery. It is from this monastery that an army of volunteers led by Minin and Prince Pozharsky set out to liberate Moscow from Polish invaders. In 1787, the monastery was closed and converted into a residence of the Yaroslavl and Rostov bishops. At that time, monastery buildings began to be reconstructed. New cells and the prior's chambers were built. It contains the remains of several well organized Neolithic settlements dating from approximately 4500 BCE. It is a large area of 5-6 hectares and surrounded by a ditch, probably a defensive moat, five or six meters wide. The houses were circular, built of mud and wood with overhanging thatched roofs. They sat on low foundations. There appears to be communal burial areas.Banpo is the type-site associated with Yangshao Culture. Archaeological sites with similarities to the first phase at Banpo are considered to be part of the Banpo phase (5000 BC to 4000 BC) of the Yangshao culture. Banpo was excavated from 1954 to 1957 and covers an area of around 50,000 square metres. The settlement was surrounded by a moat, with the graves and pottery kilns located outside of the moat perimeter. Many of the houses were semisubterranean with the floor typically a meter below the ground surface. The houses were supported by timber poles and had steeply pitched thatched roofs.

Excerpt: Barranquilla - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The territory of Barranquilla was first noted by Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo y Valdés, dating from 1533. He described it as part of the route of Pedro de Heredia, founder of Cartagena de Indias, just a few weeks before founding that city, who affirmed that the Magdalena river's mouths served as dock for Indian canoes belonging the Governorate of Santa Marta. The Kamash Indians (castilianized as Camacho or Camach) are known to have been the first settlers of Barranquilla. In the 16th century, the Spanish Crown created an encomienda for the captain Domingo de Santa Cruz, as reward for his military performance. This Encomienda disappeared in 1559 when it passed to doña Ana Ximénez, widow of Santa Cruz. This lady suffered stealing by the second Encomendero of Galapa, Don Pedro de Barros I. He arbitrarily took all the work force of the Encomienda of Camacho to his own Encomienda. Many years after, between 1627 and 1637, the Estate San Nicolás de Tolentino was founded by Nicolás de Barros y de la Guerra, great-grandson of don Pedro de Barros I, second Encomendero of Galapa. The Estate was established on the shores of La Tablaza stream. In this Estate, don Nicolás de Barros allowed his free workers to build their own houses so they could work on their own land and support their families. Moreover, after don Nicolás death, his descendants allowed another sort of resident: people who, for reasons of health, age or a relationship with the owner, were allowed to live within the Estate. These included natives from Malambo and Galapa. By 1681, the Estate was considered a town. The Estate and its nearby sites were known as Barrancas de San Nicolás. Satellite

Beyond the Culture Tours: Studies in Teaching and Learning with Culturally Diverse Texts

Beyond the Culture Tours: Studies in Teaching and Learning with Culturally Diverse Texts

$95

In calling this book Beyond the Culture Tours, the authors bring the reader's attention to a set of issues in the teaching of literature and culture. The Culture Tour is an old concept in the West, dating back to the seventeenth century. The educated young man — it was an exclusively male project at first — was expected to round off his education with the Grand Tour. This meant a visit to the major sites on the European continent, particularly Greece and Rome, and occasionally to the Holy Land. The object was to have a first-hand view of these monuments, and looking at them alone brought people the name of being cultured or well-traveled. As the idea spread in the early part of the twentieth century, it allowed for the vicarious tour rather than the actual one. Students were asked to look at collections of art or reproductions of art work, listen to concerts or later recordings, and to read certain classical works drawn from what has come to be known as "the canon." The point of this form of education was that exposure to these works in itself formed a version of the Grand Tour. The basic idea behind the tour approach is that exposure to a culture in books is like travel to an ethnic theme park. This volume looks beyond the tour approach and reports on the results of a four-year project undertaken by a research team from the National Center for Research in the Learning and Teaching of Literature. Their intent was to study the teaching and impact of multicultural literature. The team examined how students approached texts that either came from their culture or from another, and how teachers perceived the students, the literature, and their role. This volume details various aspects of their findings.

The town is located at Balgai Bay, on the northern tip of the island. As of 2000, it had a population of 10,600. Kavieng is the main port for New Ireland, and is both a trading and tourist destination. Several dive companies operate from the town, as the area is known for its diving, both for natural sites and wrecks dating from the Second World War. There are several plane and ship wrecks in Kavieng Harbour itself, as well as several more nearby. The town is serviced by Kavieng Airport, with daily connections to Port Moresby. It lies at one end of the Boluminski Highway which runs 193km to Namatanai. Kavieng has all the services one would expect from a local administrative centre: local government offices, shopping, hotels (namely the Kavieng Hotel, famous for its Friday night seafood buffet, The Malagan Beach Resort hotel and the Kavieng Club, the former "colonial club" in the town), a hospital providing general medical, paediatric and surgical services, and a weekly market. There is also a large wharf for copra export on the town's edge, allowing large deep water ships to load copra and oil directly from the land. Visible from Kavieng are the many islands of the archipelago lying between New Ireland and New Hanover, including Nusa Lik, Nusa Lawa, and Nango Island, which was formerly the site of a fish cannery in the 1960s and 1970s. Nango is now the site of a new marine research center for the PNG National Fisheries Authority. The opening of the center was overseen by the Governor General of PNG Mr. Paulius Matane in July of 2009. The area was first charted by Dutch

Traditionally, British history has been regarded as starting with the Roman Conquest. Yet this is to ignore half a million years of prehistory that still exert a profound influence on British and Irish life today. In Britain BC, Francis Pryor sets the record straight. Aided in recent years by aerial photography and coastal erosion (which has helped expose such sites as Seahenge), and by advances in scientific techniques such as radiocarbon dating and wood analysis, archaeologists have discovered compelling evidence for a much more sophisticated life among the Ancient Britons than has been previously supposed. Far from being woad-painted barbarians, the earliest inhabitants of the British Isles had developed their own religions, laws, crafts, arts, trade systems, farms, and priesthood long before the Romans’ brief occupation. Examining sites from the great ceremonial landscapes of Stonehenge, Avebury, and the Bend of the Boyne to small domestic settlements, and objects from precious ritual offerings to the tiny fragments of flint discarded by toolmakers, Francis Pryor, one of our leading archaeologists, has created a remarkable portrait of the life of our ancestors, in all its variety and complexity. His authoritative and radical re-examination of Britain and Ireland before the coming of the Romans makes us look afresh at the whole story of our islands.

Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Angkor Thom (Khmer: ; literally: “Great City”) was the last and most enduring capital city of the Khmer empire. It was established in the late twelfth century by king Jayavarman VII. It covers an area of 9 km², within which are located several monuments from earlier eras as well as those established by Jayavarman and his successors. At the centre of the city is Jayavarman’s state temple, the Bayon, with the other major sites clustered around the Victory Square immediately to the north. Bayon temple, Angkor ThomAngkor Thom was established as the capital of Jayavarman VII’s empire, and was the centre of his massive building programme. One inscription found in the city refers to Jayavarman as the groom and the city as his bride. (Higham, 121) Angkor Thom seems not to be the first Khmer capital on the site, however. Yasodharapura, dating from three centuries earlier, was centred slightly further northwest, and Angkor Thom overlapped parts of it. The most notable earlier temples within the city are the former state temple of Baphuon, and Phimeanakas, which was incorporated into the Royal Palace. The Khmers did not draw any clear distinctions between Angkor Thom and Yashodharapura: even in the fourteenth century an inscription used the earlier name. (Higham 138) The name of Angkor Thom – great city – was in use from the 16th century. The last temple known to have been constructed in Angkor Thom was Mangalartha, which was dedicated in 1295. Thereafter the existing structures continued to be modified from time to time, but any new creations were in perishable materials and have not

A visit to the final resting sites of the pioneers of the Silver State, some dating from the 1850s, will readily provide the confirmation of Twain’s statement. Those buried with “the most ceremony” include governors, stagecoach drivers, business owners, soldiers, desperados, and lawmen. Headstones with biographical epitaphs and symbolic expressions of grief are often the only record that still exists to provide a glimpse into a community’s history or the lives of the individuals who forged Nevada from the sagebrush. Many locations are readily accessible to visit, while others are not. The sites presented here provide an overview of the state’s pioneers and their role in the history of Nevada.
