“A fresh perspective on Christian singleness. Christian singles need neither more how-to books for meeting the prefect mate nor trite advice on suffering through the single life. What is lacking is a truly Christian understanding of singleness – what it means to be single and Christian. Hus suggests that a balanced, biblical view is one that honors singleness as a status equal to marriage.”

Dan Black was one of the main proponents of the ? wonky pop? scene in late 2000s, that is, unabashedly ? pop? but with some brains and musical invention, and not just slavish re-creations of current musical trends designed to get your songs in the charts. His early singles (which are collected here on his debut album) were strutting, ultra-hooky songs that mixed up hip-hop, rock, funk, and pop into a very appealing sound fronted by Black? s smooth and insistent vocals. ? Yours? and ? Alone? are both very inventive tracks, and easy-to-digest songs that fans of radio pop could get into, “Symphonies,” which is his high point as an artist so far, slows things down and wraps Black? s voice in a beautiful string sample, and shows he can deliver some real emotion. In other words, Black? s singles are a perfect manifestation of wonky pop. ((Un)) works almost as well. The singles are the best tracks, but there is plenty of competition. The rocking, dancefloor filler “Pump My Pumps,” the stuttering, fake hip-hop jam “I Love Life,” and the fun and huge-sounding “U + Me =” all come very close to dethroning the previously released singles for top honors. Black? s arrangements are always fresh-sounding, never too glossy, and filled with surprising little touches that let you know you are in the hands of a whiz kid, not just a pop singer. ((Un)) is a very impressive first record that shows tons of promise. If Black can keep the right amount of wonky in his pop, he could do something truly wonderful (like an album full of songs as good as “Symphonies”). [The American release of the album adds three tracks, including a version of "Symphonies" featuring Kid Cudi rapping the verses.] ~ Tim Sendra, Rovi

$34.98

Scottish whiskey-voiced vocalist Frankie Miller never made much of a splash in the States, despite, or perhaps because of, his fixation on American soul and R&B. Yanks have never been terribly appreciative of the music that originated in their homeland, which might have been a contributing factor to Miller’s marginal popularity in the U.S. He was a fairly major star in the U.K., though, big enough for EMI to remaster, repackage, and reissue his catalog (at least for the titles on their Chrysalis imprint) into this generous four-disc box. They even include a few rare singles and, more importantly, the original mix of his second effort, High Life, along with the previously released one, expanding this set’s total to eight albums from 1973 through 1980. Because he has recorded just a handful of platters since, and only one after his debilitating brain hemorrhage in 1994, this covers the bulk of his output and all of his best-known songs. The playing time of each runs over 75 minutes, yet there are songs missing that were included as extras reissued on the individually expanded editions by Eagle/Repertoire in 1994. Not including those cuts, most of them as good and some even better than the ones on the albums they were appended to, is a major miss for a compilation that implies completeness. Regardless, the spiffed-up audio is crisp and warm, and while some of the material is spotty, Miller’s performance is consistently energized and enthusiastic. From the gritty pub rock of his Brinsley Schwarz-backed debut to the raw soul of the Allen Toussaint-assisted High Life to the harder-edged rock of The Rock and the somewhat slick Easy Money, there is a plethora of terrific material here. Miller is as impressive singing ballads as tough, Faces-styled rockers, which makes each release reverberate with an ebb and flow making even some of the filler — and make no mistake, there is a good-sized helping of that — worth hearing. Well-arranged horns and occasional strings help, …

 100 Years of Wall Street

100 Years of Wall Street

$0.36

Relive 100 years of sensational events and unforgettablecharacters from the world’s most famous street! For the first two decades of the 20th century, Wall Street was unsafe for the individual investor; today, millions of ordinary Americans feel secure placing their nest eggs and retirement accounts in a soaring market. How did the shark-infested waters of the world’s most famous, if not notorious, street become the trusted center of global finance? How has “The Street” developed under the mixed stewardship of entrepreneurial wizards, swindlers, visionaries and government regulators? 100 Years of Wall Street, a richly illustrated popular history of the American century’s greed and ingenuity, catastrophes and triumphs, is also the very human story of rich and powerful men whose actions changed the shape of the economic landscape, often overnight. J.P. Morgan, Andrew Carnegie, Michael Milken — each in his own way had enormous influence over the way other people would live their lives. Best-selling author Charles R. Geisst’s dramatic narrative singles out the important historical events while interweaving profiles of forceful personalities, behind-the-scenes anecdotes and curious facts to produce a kaleidoscopic view of “The Street.” In addition to the 150 photographs, most of them rarely reproduced, there are charts to explain historical convulsions in the markets and reproductions of such memorabilia as early mutual fund literature and stock certificates from mining and railroad companies. An introduction to Wall Street lore that reveals many aspects of history that will be unfamiliar even to knowledgeable investors and investment professionals, 100 Years of Wall Street is very much the story of America itself. From Teddy Roosevelt’s trust-busting to the booming Reagan years to the electric economy of the present, the fortunes of Wall Street have reflected or directed many of the aspirations, achievements and miscalculations of the nation as a

100,000,000 Bon Jovi Fans Can't Be Wrong

100,000,000 Bon Jovi Fans Can’t Be Wrong

$59.98

Bon Jovi’s four-CD/one-DVD box set of rarities, 100,000,000 Bon Jovi Fans Can’t Be Wrong, inspires two immediate reactions. The first: How in the world did Bon Jovi have four discs’ worth of unreleased material in their vaults? The second: Who on earth would want to hear 50 rarities from Bon Jovi? To anybody who’s not a devoted fan, the New Jersey group always seemed like a quintessential singles-driven band. Sure, they had many albums that were blockbusters — 1986’s Slippery When Wet and its 1988 follow-up, New Jersey, dominated the American charts in the latter half of the ’80s — but those were hits because of the singles that ruled the radio, hits that were so well crafted, it was hard to believe that Bon Jovi left material behind, but as this box set proves, they did. Apparently, the band followed the lead of their fellow Jersey icon Bruce Springsteen and cut more material for each album than they could possibly have used. Starting with Slippery When Wet, the band would record somewhere between 30 and 40 songs for an individual album, then whittle it down to a 12-track album, which means a whole bunch of completed material was left behind. Some of it turned up on soundtracks or foreign-market B-sides, but most of it lay unheard in the vaults until Bon Jovi assembled this box to commemorate their 20th anniversary (which arrived around the time they sold their 100,000,000th record, hence the title). All that explains how this box came to be, but it doesn’t address whether the set is any good or not. Surprisingly, the answer is that it’s very good indeed. In the liner notes, Jon Bon Jovi claims that the band carefully chooses the songs that make the finished album so the record has a specific flow from beginning to end, meaning that the outtakes aren’t necessarily worse than what made the record — they may simply have been songs that didn’t fit the mood or spirit of a particular album. Of course, Bon Jovi’s fellow Jersey rocker Bruce Springsteen follows the s…

Green Day’s long-awaited eighth studio album, entitled 21st Century Breakdown, has finally arrived. The album is the best-selling trio’s first studio album since 2004’s two-time Grammy Award-winning punk-rock opera American Idiot, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard chart, spawned five hit singles, and went on to sell more than 12 million copies worldwide.21st Century Breakdown is divided into three acts: Heroes and Cons, Charlatans and Saints, and Horseshoes and Handgrenades, and follows a young couple, Christian and Gloria, through the mess and promise of the century so far. Songs include Know Your Enemy, 21 Guns, East Jesus Nowhere, Before the Lobotomy, and Restless Heart Syndrome. In a recent feature, Rolling Stone called the album even more ambitious than American Idiot and a record of die-hard punk ideals…tightly scripted, continually ascending classic-rock excitement. Singer-guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, bassist Mike Dirnt, and drummer Tre Cool have been at work writing, arranging, and recording 21st Century Breakdown since early 2006 and are currently making finishing touches with producer Butch Vig, who is known for his work with Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Garbage, and many others.

 35 Biggest Hits

35 Biggest Hits

For many mainstream listeners, Toby Keith first appeared on their radar in 2002 with “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American),” the blistering counterpoint to Alan Jackson’s sorrowful “Where Were You When the World Stopped Turning” that turned Keith into a talk radio phenomenon and a genuine American star. Like many overnight success stories, Toby Keith’s celebrity didn’t happen overnight — it was the beginning of his second act, as the 2008 double-disc compilation 35 Biggest Hits makes plain. 35 Biggest Hits divides neatly into a disc of ’90s hits and a disc of new-millennium singles, stopping with 2006’s White Trash with Money (2007’s Big Dog Daddy apparently falling under another contract and thereby absent from this comp) but adding the new recording “She’s a Hottie,” an OK rocker that feels like the contractual obligation it likely is. This split makes sense chronologically but it also makes sense musically, as Keith’s ’90s hits were much softer than his 2000s singles. After establishing his modern-day outlaw stance with “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” and “A Little Less Talk and a Lot More Action” in 1993, Keith spent much of the ’90s crooning ballads vaguely reminiscent of Ronnie Milsap’s early-’80s hits (such as the lovely “Does That Blue Moon Ever Shine on You”), but when he jumped from Mercury Nashville to DreamWorks in 1999, his sound got bigger and tougher, eventually leading to the Waylon-indebted swagger of “Beer for My Horses” and “Honky Tonk U.” Most musicians do their most adventurous work earlier in their careers, but 35 Biggest Hits shows that Toby Keith is the opposite, getting bolder and riskier as the years go by. Such a statement suggests that his earlier records weren’t much good but that’s not the case at all; he had loose-limbed barroom rockers like “You Ain’t Much Fun” early in his career and all of the ballads are very good, showcasing a sensitive side that has been overshadowed by the outsized persona he’…

 A Hard Day's Night (Album)

A Hard Day’s Night (Album)

$76.99

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! A Hard Day’s Night is the third studio album by The Beatles, released on 10 July 1964 as the soundtrack to their film A Hard Day’s Night. The American version of the album was released on 26 June 1964 by United Artists Records with a different track listing. It was eventually replaced by the original UK version with its first release on CD, 26 February 1987. While showcasing the development of the band’s songwriting talents, the album sticks to the basic rock and roll instrumentation and song format. The album contains some of their most famous songs, including the title track and its distinct, instantly recognizable opening chord; and “Can’t Buy Me Love”, both were transatlantic number one singles for the band. The album and film are said to portray the classic image of the Beatles, as it was released at the height of Beatlemania. According to music critic Richie Unterberger, “George Harrison’s resonant 12-string electric guitar leads were hugely influential; the movie helped persuade the Byrds, then folksingers, to plunge all out into rock & roll, and the Beatles would be hugely influential on the folk-rock explosion of 1965.

A different remix version by producer Trevor Horn appeared on the 1982 U.S. 12″. The music video for the song, taped on a soundstage, was influenced by old British music hall, the chalk pavement sequence in the Mary Poppins film, carnival sideshows, and Punch and Judy puppet shows; the four band members were featured wearing Edwardian-style light suits with vertical pastel stripes, accompanied by many colourful extras. The video vaguely pays homage to Gene Kelly’s Ballet sequence from An American in Paris. Chapters: Road Accident Deaths in Jamaica, Lucas Barrett, Jacob Miller, Tenor Saw, Natasja Saad, Winston Anglin, Peter Cargill, Stephen Malcolm. Excerpt: Jacob Miller (May 4, 1952 March 23, 1980) was a Jamaican reggae artist who first recorded with Clement Dodd. While pursuing a prolific solo career, he became the lead singer for reggae group Inner Circle with whom he recorded until his death. His success was cut short when he was killed in a car accident at the age of 27. Jacob Miller was born in Mandeville, central Jamaica on May 4, 1952 to Joan Ashman and Desmond Elliot. At the age of eight he moved to Kingston, Jamaica where he grew up with his maternal grandparents. In Kingston, Miller began spending time at popular studios including Clement Dodds Studio One. He recorded three songs for Dodd, including Love is a Message in 1968, which the Swaby brothers, (Horace, later called Augustus Pablo, and Garth) played at their Rockers Sound System. While the song did not garner much success nor maintain Dodds attention in Miller, it resulted in Pablos sustained interest in Miller. After the brothers launched their own label in 1972, Pablo recorded a version of Love is a Message named Keep on Knocking in 1974. In the next year and a half Miller recorded five more songs for Pablo, Baby I Love You So, False Rasta, Who Say Jah No Dread, Each One Teach One, and Girl Named Pat, each of which became a Rockers classic with King Tubby dubs on their b-sides. These singles developed Millers reputation and ultimately drew Inner Circle to hire him as a replacement lead singer. Inner Circle was an emerging reggae group made popular playing covers of American Top 40 hits. Band leader Roger Lewis said Jacob Miller was always happy and jovial. He always made jokes. Excerpt: 40-Hour Week item Alabama chronology item Roll On (1984): 40-Hour Week (1985): Alabama Christmas (1985) 40-Hour Week is the sixth studio album from country music band Alabama . Released in 1985, the album featured three songs that topped the Billboard magazine Hot Country Singles chart and continued the band’s dominance during the 1980s. Two of the No. 1 tracks “There’s No Way ” and the title track became milestones in Alabama’s recording career during 1985. When it reached the top of the chart in “There’s No Way” on May 4, it became Alabama’s 16th straight No. 1 single in as many single releases (excepting for the 1982 Christmas single “Christmas in Dixie “). The feat allowed Alabama to tie Sonny James ‘ 14-year-old record for most No. 1 songs in as many consecutive single releases. Then, on August 3, “40 Hour Week (For a Livin’)” topped the chart, becoming Alabama’s 17th-straight chart topper and allowing them to surpass James’ record. Among the album tracks, several of them praising the South, 40 Hour Week also features the ballad “I Want To Know You Before We Make Love,” which would become a major hit for Conway Twitty in 1987.
