Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 48. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: St Albans Cathedral (formerly St Albans Abbey, officially The Cathedral and Abbey Church of St Alban) is a Church of England Cathedral church at St Albans, England. At 84 metres (276 ft), its nave is the longest of any cathedral in England. With much of its present architecture dating from Norman times, it became a cathedral in 1877, and is the second longest cathedral in the United Kingdom. Local residents often call it “the Abbey”, although the present cathedral represents only the church of the old Benedictine abbey. The abbey church, although legally a cathedral church, differs in certain particulars from most of the other cathedrals in England: it is also used as a parish church, of which the Dean is rector. He has the same powers, responsibilities, and duties as the rector of any other parish. Alban was a pagan living in the Roman city of Verulamium, where St Albans is now, in Hertfordshire, England, about 22 miles (35 km) north of London along Watling Street. Before Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire, local Christians were being persecuted by the Romans. Alban sheltered their priest, Saint Amphibalus, in his home and was converted to the Christian faith by him. When the soldiers came to Alban’s house looking for the priest, Alban exchanged cloaks with the priest and let himself be arrested in his stead. Alban was taken before the magistrate, where he avowed his new Christian faith and was condemned for it. He was beheaded, according to legend, on the spot where the cathedral named for him now stands. The site is on …More: |

1220s Books (Study Guide): Prose Edda, Lancelot-Grail, Song of the Albigensian Crusade, Fagrskinna, Diu Crone $14.14 Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: Prose Edda, Lancelot-Grail, Song of the Albigensian Crusade, Fagrskinna, Diu Crône, L’histoire de Guillaume le Marechal, Mu’jam Al-Buldan. Source: Wikipedia. Free updates online. Not illustrated. Excerpt: The Prose Edda, also known as the Younger Edda, Snorri’s Edda (Icelandic: ) or simply Edda, is an Old Norse language Icelandic collection of four sections interspersed with excerpts from earlier skaldic and Eddic poetry containing tales from Norse mythology. The work is often assumed to be written by the Icelandic scholar and historian Snorri Sturluson around the year 1220. The Prose Edda begins with a euhemerized Prologue followed by three distinct books: Gylfaginning (consisting of around 20,000 words), Skáldskaparmál (around 50,000 words) and Háttatal (around 20,000 words). Seven manuscripts, dating from around 1300 to around 1600, have independent textual value. The purpose of the collection was to enable Icelandic poets and readers to understand the subtleties of alliterative verse, and to grasp the meaning behind the many kennings that were used in skaldic poetry. The Prose Edda was originally referred to as simply the Edda, but was later called the Prose Edda to distinguish it from the Poetic Edda, a collection of anonymous poetry from earlier traditional sources compiled around the same time as the Prose Edda in 13th century Iceland. The Prose Edda is related to the Poetic Edda in that the Prose Edda cites various poems collected in the Poetic Edda as sources. The assumption that Snorri Sturluson is responsible for writing the Prose Edda is largely based on the following paragraph from a portion of Codex Upsaliensis, an early 14th century manuscript containing the Prose Edda: This book is called Edda. Snorri Sturluson compiled it in the way that it is arranged here. |

Excerpt: Events Arts and literature Births Deaths A hyperlinked version of this chapter is at The flag of Maastricht (Dutch : Vlag van Maastricht , Limburgish (Maastrichtian variant ): Veendel vaan Mestreech or Drappo vaan Mestreech ) is the official flag of Maastricht , the capital city of the province of Limburg in the Netherlands . It constitutes a red vertical surface with a five-pointed star on its left side (a star that is common amongst many flags e.g. the flag of Chile ). It had been an historical flag, with its first image of appearance dating from 1545, of the municipality but was replaced with a flag identical in design to, amongst others, the current Polish flag in 1938. To avoid confusion, the old flag was reinstated in 1994. History In 1438 the flag of Maastricht is described as being as a six-pointed star on a red field, with the first historic image dating from 1545. The mentioned image was published in the Wappenbuch von Meister IK -book in Frankfurt am Main , Germany . However, in 1549, the flag is stated as being “yellow-white-red”. In 1647, the white-star-on-red design had apparently returned when the Peace of Münster treaty was signed. The next known design is the white-red (with the upper part of the flag being white, and the lower part being red) design similar to the Polish flag. In 1993 it was decided by the municipal government to reinstate the first design and the flag was re-inaugurated on January 1, 1994. Design Flag of Maastricht on top of the Fort Sint Pieter (Saint Peter’s Fortress)The height of the white star on the flag has to measure 3/5 of the entire flagheight and the space above and beneath the star has to be equal. Furthermore, the proportions between the height and the width has to be 2:3. This design designation has been in use |

Excerpt: The Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle is an order of chivalry associated with Scotland. The current version of the Order was founded in 1687 by King James VII of Scotland (also known as James II of England) who asserted that he was reviving an earlier Order. The Order consists of the Sovereign and sixteen Knights and Ladies, as well as certain “extra” knights (members of the British Royal Family and foreign monarchs). The Sovereign alone grants membership of the Order; he or she is not advised by the Government, as occurs with most other Orders. The Order’s primary emblem is the thistle, the national flower of Scotland. The motto is Nemo me impune lacessit (Latin for “No one provokes me with impunity”). The same motto appears on the Royal Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom for use in Scotland and some pound coins, and is also the motto of the Royal Regiment of Scotland, Scots Guards, and Royal Scots Dragoon Guards. The patron saint of the Order is St Andrew. Most British orders of chivalry cover the whole United Kingdom, but the three most exalted ones each pertain to one constituent country only. The Order of the Thistle, which pertains to Scotland, is the second-most senior in precedence. Its equivalent in England, The Most Noble Order of the Garter, is the oldest documented order of chivalry in the United Kingdom, dating to the middle fourteenth century. In 1783 an Irish equivalent, The Most Illustrious Order of St Patrick, was founded, but has now fallen dormant. James VII ordained the modern OrderJames VII claimed that he was reviving an earlier Order, but this issue is marked by widely varying claims. Excerpt: Maesyronnen Chapel – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia In 1689 the Act of Toleration granted Nonconformists freedom to worship in their own buildings without certain legal strictures that had formerly applied. Maesyronnen Chapel was one of the earliest buildings in Wales to be created for this purpose. It was developed from an existing longhouse (a farmhouse with an attached cattle-shed), the cattle-shed being converted into a chapel and the farmhouse used by the caretaker. The conversion took place in the 1690s, either in 1691 or in 169697. It was registered as a chapel in 1697 and was used by a congegation which had been meeting in secret in a barn nearby since the 1640s. The chapel was built on land given by Charles Lloyd, squire of Maesllwch. The original farmhouse would have been a substantial building dating from the Elizabethan era. At some time it was replaced by a much smaller house, a chapel-house, for the minister. The original roof was replaced in the 18th century and the floor, formerly beaten earth, was flagged. In 1980 the chapel received a grant for repairs, having been recognised as a building of “outstanding architectural and historic importance” by the Historic Buildings Council. Further restoration and repair became necessary in the 21st century and Cadw gave a grant of £50,000, following a recommendation from the Historic Buildings Advisory Council for Wales. The chapel re-opened for worship in the spring of 2008. The plan of the chapel is that of a simple rectangle, measuring about 55 feet (17 m) by 2… More: |

Excerpt: The Province of New Hampshire was a crown colony organized on October 7, 1691, during the period of British colonization of the Americas. The charter was enacted May 14, 1692, by William and Mary, the joint monarchs of the Kingdom of England and the Kingdom of Scotland, at the same time that the Province of Massachusetts Bay was created. Both were formerly parts of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The Province of New Hampshire was located in the present-day U.S. state of New Hampshire, and was named after the county of Hampshire in southern England by John Mason. The province did not get its own colonial governor until 1741, when Benning Wentworth was appointed. Many of the subsequent New Hampshire Grants later became the state of Vermont. Prior to British colonization, the area which became the province was populated by bands of the Abenaki, who lived in sometimes large villages of longhouses. Depending on the season they would either remain near their villages to fish, gather plants, engage in sugaring, and trade or fight with their neighbors, or head to nearby fowling and hunting grounds; later they also farmed tobacco and the”three sisters”: corn, beans, and squash. Prior to 1691, the “New Hampshire Colony” was the product of several English land grants dating from 1623, when it was first founded by John Mason, to 1680. For much of its colonial history it was controlled by the Massachusetts Bay Colony based in Boston. In 1631 Captain Thomas Wiggin served as the first governor of the province of the Upper Plantation of New Hampshire, comprising modern-day Dover, Durham and Stratham… More: |

Instead, they are decisions from various Pennsylvania courts, dating from the colonial period and the first decade after Independence. Alexander Dallas , a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania lawyer and journalist, had been in the business of reporting these cases for newspapers and periodicals. He subsequently began compiling his case reports in a bound volume, which he called “Reports of cases ruled and adjudged in the courts of Pennsylvania, before and since the Revolution”. This would come to be known as the first volume of “Dallas Reports.”When the United States Supreme Court, along with the rest of the new Federal Government, moved in 1791 to the nations temporary capital in Philadelphia, Dallas was appointed the Supreme Courts first unofficial and unpaid Supreme Court Reporter . (Court reporters in that age received no salary, but were expected to profit from the publication and sale of their compiled decisions.) Dallas continued to collect and publish Pennsylvania decisions in a second volume of his Reports, and when the Supreme Court began hearing cases, he added those cases to his reports, starting towards the end of the second volume, “2 Dallas Reports”. Dallas would go on to publish a total of 4 volumes of decisions during his tenure as Reporter. In 1874, the U.S. government created the |

Excerpt: The 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup was the ninth edition of the tournament and took place in the West Indies from 13 March to 28 April 2007, using the sport’s One Day International format. There were a total of 51 matches played, three fewer than at the 2003 World Cup (despite a field larger by two teams). The 16 competing teams were initially divided into four groups, with the two best-performing teams from each group moving on to a “Super 8″ format. From this, Australia , New Zealand , Sri Lanka and South Africa won through to the semi-finals, with Australia defeating Sri Lanka in the final to win their third consecutive World Cup. Australia’s unbeaten record in the tournament increased their total to 29 consecutive World Cup matches without loss, a streak dating back to 23 May 1999, during the group stage of the 1999 World Cup.Following the tournament the ICC distributed surplus tournament revenues of USD 239 million to its members. Host selection The World Cup was awarded to the West Indies via the International Cricket Council ’s rotational policy. It is the first time the Cricket World Cup has been held in the Caribbean despite the fact that the West Indies cricket team have been the second most successful team in past World Cups. Excerpt: The following events occurred in architecture in the 4th millennium BC : See also (online edition) A hyperlinked version of this chapter is at Stonehenge, Avebury and Associated Sites • “Bluestonehenge” or “Bluehenge” is a prehistoric henge and stone circle monument that was discovered by the Stonehenge Riverside Project about 1 mile (1.6 km) south-east of Stonehenge in Wiltshire , England . All that presently remains of the site is the ditch of the henge and a series of stone settings, none of which is visible above ground. The site was excavated in August 2008 and again in August 2009 and is considered to be an important find by archaeologists . Full details of the discovery are expected to be published in February 2010. Initial findings The monument has been tentatively dated to between about 3000 and 2400 BC, although radiocarbon dating of antler tools found at the site has not yet been completed. Excavation revealed several stone settings that are thought to have been erected around 3000 BC. It is estimated that there may have been as many as 27 stones in a circle 33 feet (10 m) wide. Charcoal was found in some holes, suggesting that burning may have taken place there. One suggestion is that the henge was a site for cremations . The name “Bluestonehenge” is derived from the discovery of small stone chips in some of the stone settings. These bluestones are also found in Stonehenge and consist of a wide range of rock types |

The monastery was the center of the regional Christian community, and for centuries thousands of Christians would visit the monastery to observe the Mar Elia Holiday, which falls on the last Wednesday of November. The monastery was renovated in the 17th century by Hurmizd Alqushnaya. In 1743, the Persian leader Tahmaz Nadir Shah ordered the destruction of its property and the death of the monks who dwelled there. The monastery laid in ruins until the beginning of 20th century, when some restoration was completed on a few halls and rooms. The structure, along with its neighboring reservoir and natural mineral water springs, were cared for by the Chaldean Church, and Christian pilgrims continued to visit the ruins. 2003 war Following World War II , Iraq’s army placed its headquarters and a tank battalion in the monastery. The military post remained in place into the 21st century. During the 2003 invasion of Iraq, the monastery was the site of combat. An Iraqi armor unit used the monastery as a command post, they defaced all the rooms with graffiti, and clogged the historical |

Excerpt: Amphipolis – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia View of the delta of the river Strymon from the acropolis of AmphipolisArchaeology has uncovered remains at the site dating to approximately 3000 BC. Due to the strategic location of the site it was fortified from very early. Xerxes I of Persia passed during his invasion of Greece of 480 BC and buried alive nine young men and nine maidens as a sacrifice to the river god. Near the later site of Amphipolis Alexander I of Macedon defeated the remains of Xerxes’ army in 479 BC. Throughout the 5th century BC, Athens sought to consolidate its control over Thrace, which was strategically important because of its primary materials (the gold and silver of the Pangaion hills and the dense forests essential for naval construction), and the sea routes vital for Athens’ supply of grain from Scythia. After a first unsuccessful attempt at colonisation in 497 BC by the Miletian Tyrant Histiaeus, the Athenians founded a first colony at Ennea-Hodoi (Nine Ways) in 465, but these first ten thousand colonists were massacred by the Thracians. A second attempt took place in 437 BC on the same site under the guidance of Hagnon, son of Nicias. Map of AmphipolisThe new settlement took the name of Amphipolis (literally, “around the city”), a name which is the subject of much debates about lexicography. Thucydides claims the name comes from the fact that the Strymon flows “around the city” on two sides; however a note in the Suda (also given in the lexicon of Photius) offers a different explanation apparently given by Marsyas, son of Periander: that a large proportion of the population lived “around the city”. However, a more probable explanation is the one given by Julius Pollux: that the name indicates the vicinity of an ist… More: |

Its original location also provides it with another name: the Apollon from the west pediment . It is one of the most important statues of the Severe style or early Classical style, dating from ca. 460 BCE . The statue is currently in the archaeological museum in Olympia. The sculptures of the west pediment depicted the battle of the Lapiths against the Centaurs , following the wedding feast of Peirithous and Hippodamia . The battle of the Lapiths – legendary inhabitants of Thessaly – against the Centaurs – wild forest inhabitants with a human upper half and the body of a horse – frequently acted as a mythological metaphor for the conflicts between the Greeks and the Barbarians . Most of the figures in this turbulent battle scene were discovered during the German excavations of 1875, led by the archaeologist Georg Treu .The juvenile Apollo stood in the centre |

9th-Century Christianity $20.86 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: Christianity in the 9th Century, Christianization of Scandinavia, Emperor Wuzong of Tang, Cadaver Synod, Christianization of the Rus’ Khaganate, Anglo-Saxon Mission. Excerpt: The High Middle Ages begins in the 9th century with the coronation of Charlemagne in 800 and continued with the Photian schism. With the coronation of Charlemagne by Pope Leo III in 800, his new title as Patricius Romanorum, and the handing over of the keys to the Tomb of Saint Peter, the papacy had acquired a new protector in the West. This freed the pontiffs to some degree from the power of the emperor in Constantinople but also led to a schism, because the emperors and patriarchs of Constantinople interpreted themselves as the true descendants of the Roman Empire dating back to the beginnings of the Church. Pope Nicholas I had refused to recognize Patriarch Photios I of Constantinople ,who in turn had attacked the pope as a heretic, because he kept the filioque in the creed, which referred to the Holy Spirit emanating from God the Father and the Son. The papacy was strengthened through this new alliance, which in the long term created a new problem for the Popes, when in the Investiture Controversy succeeding emperors sought to appoint bishops and even future popes. After the disintegration of the Charlemagne empire and repeated incursions of Islamic forces into Italy, the papacy, without any protection, entered a phase of major weakness. The Carolingian Renaissance was a period of intellectual and cultural revival during the late 8th and 9th centuries, mostly during the reigns of Charlemagne and Louis the Pious. There was an increase of literature, the arts, architecture, jurisprudence, liturgical and scriptural studies. The period also saw the development of Caro… More: |

African American History in North Carolina: History of North Carolina, St. Paul A.m.e. Church (Raleigh, North Carolina), Pope House Museum $10 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The earliest discovered human settlements in what eventually became North Carolina are found at the Hardaway Site near the town of Badin in the south-central part of the state. Radiocarbon dating of the site has not been possible. However, based on other dating methods, such as rock strata and the existence of Dalton-type spear points, the site has been dated to approximately 8000 BC. Spearpoints of the Dalton type continued to change and evolve slowly for the next 7000 years, suggesting a continuity of culture for most of that time. During this time, settlement was scattered and likely existed solely on the hunter-gatherer level. Towards the end of this period, there is evidence of settled agriculture, such as plant domestication and the development of pottery. From 1000 BC until the time of European settlement marks a time period known as the “Woodland period”. Permanent villages, based on settled agriculture, existed throughout the state. By about 800 AD, fortified towns appeared throughout the Piedmont region, suggesting the existence of organized tribal warfare. An important site of this late-Woodland period is the Town Creek Indian Mound, an archaeologically rich location occupied by the Pee Dee culture of the Mississippian tradition. Map of North America by Vesconte Maggiolo after an earlier map made on the Verrazzano expedition of 1524. The narrow isthmus of land separating “Tera Florida” from “Francesca” is the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Cape Fear is labeled “C. de la Foresto”.The earliest exploration of North Carolina by a European expedition is likely that of Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. An Italian from Florence, Verrazzano was hired by French merchants in order to procure a sea route to bring silk to the city of Lyon. With… More: |

In the seventh century, many Spanish Jews fled persecution under the Visigoths to North Africa, where they made their homes in the Byzantine-dominated cities along the Mediterranean coast. Some, however, moved further inland and actively proselytized among the Berber tribes. A number of tribes, including the Jarawa, Uled Jari, and some tribes of the Daggatun people, converted to Judaism. Ibn Khaldun reported that Kahina, a female Berber warlord who led the resistance against the Arab invaders of North Africa in the 680’s and 690’s, was a Jew of the Jarawa tribe. Excerpt: 61 species; see text. Allocasuarina littoralis drawing Allocasuarina inophloiaAllocasuarina is a genus of trees in the flowering plant family Casuarinaceae. They are endemic to Australia, occurring primarily in the south. Like the closely related genus Casuarina, they are commonly called sheoaks or she-oaks, they are notable for their long, segmented branchlets that function as leaves. Formally termed cladodes, these branchlets somewhat resemble pine needles, although sheoaks are actually flowering plants. The leaves are reduced to minute scales encircling each joint. Fallen cladodes form a dense, soft mat beneath sheoaks, preventing the development of undergrowth and making sheoak woods remarkably quiet. Another characteristic feature are the spiny “cones”, about the size of an acorn but with a texture more resembling a conifer cone. However, sheoak “cones” are actually a woody fruit. As with legumes, sheoak roots possess nodules containing symbiotic nitrogen fixing bacteria; together with their highly drought-adapted foliage, this enables sheoaks to thrive in very poor soil and semi-arid areas. However, sheoaks are much less bushfire-tolerant than eucalypts. Fossils of closely related species have been found dating back to the time of Gondwana. The hard wood and rich texture makes sheoak wood popular among wood-turners. Sheoak wood is also regarded as an excellent firewood as it burns with very little ash. Because of its ability to grow and develop extensive root systems in very … More: |
